Budget Travel to Cooperstown with Kids 1 Day Itinerary is the perfect Day trip from The Capital Region or even an NYC weekend trip. There’s plenty to do indoors and outside that it’s great to visit any time of year. Cooperstown located in Upstate New York, is approximately 1.5 hours from the Capital Region. You can also combine your Day trip to Cooperstown with a Day in nearby Fly Creek or Glimmerglass State Park to make it a weekend getaway to the Cooperstown area.
Brewery Ommegang
First Stop: Brewery Ommegang is a family-friendly brewery that offers a wide range of events. The Brewery’s BINGO Brunch is a big hit. Usually held on Sundays around 11 am but you will need to show up around 10:15 to assure a seat. It’s possible to get seated early, around 10:30 am. However, the kitchen does not open until 11 am which is also when BINGO Begins. If heading to Brewery Ommegang’s BINGO Brunch, you will want to leave the Capitol Region around a quarter of 9 to make sure you arrive early enough to get in before they hit capacity.
Eating breakfast before or on the drive-out will assure you aren’t starving while you wait to be served. Drinks are offered when you are seated and the service is fantastic. appetizers arrived around 11:30 and entrees at noon.
Make sure to eat breakfast before or on the road or you will be pretty hungry waiting for your meal. The kitchen staff works hard in what I imagine to be a Hell’s Kitchen Scenario where the entire restaurant is seated at the same time and all orders come in all at once. This is why it’s very understanding their menu is fairly limited.
Brewery Ommegang Food
There are actually 2 menus. One that is their normal brunch menu with appetizers and a special menu that includes a beermosa with your order. These entrees are a great value for $15 because a beermosa is $7 so you are essentially paying $8 for the entrée. In addition, BINGO is FREE so your $15 entrée covers your meal, a beermosa, and 2 hours of BINGO fun. * You must be 21+ to win prizes.
Our table tried the Chorizo Nachos and soft pretzels as appetizers. Entrees included Chicken sandwiches, Chicken and Waffles, Poutine, Cranberry salad, and Waffles with fresh berries and whipped cream. Unfortunately, the chicken for 2 of the sandwiches and 2 chicken and waffles were overcooked. Also, the sauce on the chicken and waffles was a bit too sweet for my liking. the poutine gravy tasted a little burnt as well. The waffles with fresh berries and whipped cream were fantastic with nice crispy chunks of waffled fresh berries and fresh thick whipped cream. Given the constraints on the kitchen, we understand things happen and will definitely try again. I will definitely try the charcuterie next time.
After brunch head to the Farmer’s Museum or the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Farmer’s Museum
The farmer’s museum in Cooperstown is a great family activity. There are some museum displays where kids can’ learn about broom making and even beer making. Then head outside to see a recreated farm. The farm animals are very friendly. During one visit a sheep had just given birth and we were able to see her only hours old lamb.
At the blacksmith shop, kids can learn how tools are made by hand. At the farmhouse, kids can learn about how they cooked before modern-day stoves.
Baseball Hall of Fame
If you have time finish your day at the baseball Hall of Fame. It’s a fun family indoor activity in Cooperstown no matter what the weather is outside. Learn about the history of baseball and all the hall of Famers who have made the game America’s favorite sport.
Budget Cooperstown with Kids is possible if you look for specials that can save you a lot such as their food drive day which provides free admission with a non-perishable food donation. You can also purchase a Triple Play ticket that includes the Baseball Hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum, and the Farmer’s Museum.
Dinner in Cooperstown, NY
End your visit with dinner at one of Cooperstown’s many restaurants. fThey offer a variety from farm to table to fine dining. There are many great options. If you need to get on the road stop by Stewart’s Shop for some ice cream. A kids cone is very large. You can also grab a quick dinner including my favorite guilty pleasure Stewart’s hot dog with chili sauce and diced onions.
